it might have been cold that morning, but elizabeth did not notice. it was around mid-morning; the sun was sitting hazily behind the tree line and the day, a sunday, was groggily climbing out from under its night rock. denali national park buzzed with the activity of early morning risers - small birds, mammals and the occasional deer; and then of course, there was elizabeth, in her human form and entirely alone. she had always been a morning person - it was five in the morning or nothing else. just as the sun spilled its first pink and gold rays of life into the limitless sky, lizzie would be jumping into a relatively cool shower, ready for a new day. on that particular day, lizzie had already written and sent an essay-length letter to her mother and father, taken her dog, gibbs, for a run around the neighbourhood and re-read a book she planned to write a review on for her favourite national newspaper.
in fact, in her favourite brown leather bag that was currently slung over her right shoulder, a draft copy of her review along with the book in question and a few pens sat neatly, ready for her creative side to begin writing. had she not needed to stretch her legs as urgently as she currently did, she might have already begun proofreading and finalising. her mind was on one thing; galloping, and galloping was what she did. after a quick, intense scan of the area for any sign of human life, she swiftly leapt forward and transformed mid jump into her equine form. suddenly, a mass of mohogany bay and black blurred through the trees, hooves moving like pistons and yet flowing like silk through the air. it had been too long. due to unforeseen circumstances, a crisis between two of her close friends and a few unexpected deadlines, she had not been able to transform in just over a week. it felt good to let loose and simply run, slicing through the air as only a horse could.
she liked to think she was invincible. when she became a horse, she was free. nothing else mattered but moving forward; eating up the ground beneath her with speed she would never accomplish by herself in her human form. her black mane and tail whipped out behind her, dancing with the wind she created on such a still day, all by herself. the thought thrilled her. when she was a horse, she could make things happen. when she was a horse, nothing could tame her.
she fell slowly back to earth, elated by her youthful spirit that yearned to continue galloping. what she would give up just to continue as she was at that moment forever. but she shook her long head and neck in a horsey manner, her thick mane whipping around her. forcing herself to slow her movement, elizabeth breathed deeply to calm herself as she followed the natural topography around a bend in the track. ahead, a tree had fallen halfway across the track. she grinned to herself and once more leaped forward, soaring through the air. she tucked her forelegs underneath herself neatly and drew her hind legs up. she seemed to float through the air for an eternity, and for what it was, she remained airbourne longer than any full horse could. as she finally approached the ground, she gave one last swish of her tail and transformed back into her human form, landing gracefully on the ground once more and jogging a few steps before stopping.
her breathing was deep, but only for a minute. elizabeth was soon walking again, in search of the perfect reading spot. no sooner than ten minutes later and she found it; an overhanging rock situation just above a small gully that lead towards a river which, if she strained, she could hear from her quiet position. lizzie sat indian style on her rock and pulled out her paper; with a flourish of her pen, she began to write.

Post by Caidan 'Ace' Montgomery on Nov 28, 2008 11:30:00 GMT -5
Caidan had had a long night. Drinking was the main event. A large group had gotten together to party in the national park around 10pm the previous day. The event lasted until 1am when police came and broke the party up. Unfortunately for Caidan, by the time the police came, he had already passed out. His drinking had been heavier than usual. Something really rough happened the night before: his father called him. Renesmee did not make it to the party. There was no one there who cared enough to make sure Caidan didn’t drink himself silly. So, he did.
At some point, he wandered off into the trees by himself. His awkward and indirect steps eventually landed him a spot right up against a fallen tree. From the other direction, no one would be able to notice his presence. He was hidden from sight by the horizontal height of the tree. As the hours moved on, Caidan began to slowly awake from his alcohol inspired state. A large gust of wind accompanied by a shaking of the ground and a loud noise caused his eyes to shoot open. ”What the…” His words came out groggily as he sloppily sat up.
Pain slammed into his head as his previous actions began catching up with him. He was usually good about only drinking what he could handle. Last night had been an exception…a big one at that. When his eyes focused enough to make out a shape, Caidan saw the figure of a horse galloping away. Then, he saw something that he never would have suspected. All of the sudden the horse was gone. A human girl stood by the water. His right hand came and smacked himself in the face. That could not have been real. As more pain riddled through his form, Caidan realized that what he saw must have happened in some way. The girl must have been riding a horse. Either way, he was going to investigate.
Using the tree trunk as a brace, Caidan slowly got to his feet. He was still wearing his jeans that were styled with holes. A silver riveted belt held them in place just below his boxer line. The grey band of his boxers was low enough to show the beginnings of his chiseled stomach. His shirt was missing. It must have been a casualty of the evening. Caidan was also missing the evenings winnings. Someone must have caught him in his dreadful state and taken the money he had won at the card table. A loud curse echoed within the forest upon this revelation. The loss of a shirt was okay. The loss of his winnings meant war. No one messed with Caidan’s card money. Teeming with anger, Caidan began to walk toward the location of the horse or girl or whatever he had just seen. ”Yoohoo, who’s there?”

she had thought she was alone. the stillness of the day ahead of her had seemed so sure, so condfident. the unfamiliar sound of a man's voice reached her ears and immediately her senses were on edge. as lizzie glanced to her left, the sight of a young man not much older than herself met her hazel gaze. he donned a pair of fashionably ripped up jeans and seemed to have either misplaced his shirt or had simply forgotten to wear one that day. he had a dishelved look about him which told liz two things; the first was that he had obviously been out all of last night and the second was that he did not seem like the type or person she would want to associate with.
'good morning,' said lizzie. she was first and foremost a polite woman, and so she flashed him a nice smile in greeting. she eyed him warily however, unsure of where he stood in regards to her wellbeing. gently lowering her pen and paper to the ground before her lap, she turned her body to face the young man and couldn't help but brace herself, ready for anything. 'i'm liz. and what, may i ask, brings you to this part of the national park so early in the morning ?'
suddenly, alarm bells began ringing in the forefront of her mind. he had just sauntered over from the direct in which she had arrived; surely, possibly, he had seen her in her equine form ? she panicked as blood coursed through her body nervously, only just managing to hide her unease. nobody but liz knew about her shapeshifting ablity. she tried as hard as she might to keep from letting anyone find out about her ability. not even her beloved parents knew about it; if they did, she wasn't sure how they would treat her afterwards. she guiltily felt like a freak, like she was not normal and didn't belong. her heart pounded in alarm and she wished beyond all reason that he had not seen her change shape.
the day clocked on and she wondered how everything around her could be so at ease while she was so torn up. life, it seemed, would continue on despite everything that happened around it. liz felt a strong connection to nature. she had studied it at school and now she lived amoungst it, sometimes literally. sometimes, when everything else in her life became too much, she would transform and spend a few days and nights in the national park, easily dodging hunters and freeing her mind of the hectic life she lead.
